HOW TO USE THE SW APPLETS

If you are a Mac computer user, you can view Slidable worm-Wormviewer and Wormtiler applets with the internet browsers; Netscape communicator 6.2 or Internet Explorer . This restriction is brought about by the requirements of the applet code which is not supported by the earlier versions of Netscape communicator for Mac.

Clicking on Slidable worm-Wormviewer from the Index page will take you to the SW Wormviewer 1.0 applet as shown below. Using the applet, you can choose the TEM sections you would like to see by either dragging the red bar along the worm image (1) or by clicking on the number of slice buttons (2) until you reach the section number you want to see. At this stage, you can view the slice as a thumbnail on the left side of the page (3). You have three options to view each section; non-annotated (LabelsOff (4)), transparently annotated (Transparent (5)) and opaquely annotated (Opaque (6)) . The pixel numbers of currently available TEM slices are listed at the top of the applet window.

After selecting any of these options, you need to click on the "load" button (7) to see the 600 x 600 px image corresponding to your selection in a new page. Note that this new page can only be closed by clicking the "Close" button (8) and not the small window on the left upper hand corner (9). "Download" button (10) will open the image in a new browser window.

Some of the images provided in SW may contain structures that we have not yet identified. These structures are either not annotated, or annotated but marked with a question mark.

From the Wormviewer applet you have the option to connect to the Wormtiler applet by clicking on "Wormtiler" button (11). Note that this will take you to slice number 50 in Wormtiler and not to the same slice that you have been viewing in Wormviewer. If you want to see the slice that you have been viewing in Wormtiler you must then enter the slice number in the "enter new slice" window in Wormtiler.

Slidableworm-Wormtiler has been designed for users to be able to view the TEM slices presented in Wormviewer in very high resolution. For this purpose, each of the electron micrographs has been cut to 600 x 400 px sized "tiles"across and vertically. The applet starts from Slice number 50 (arrow 12) and shows the tile from this image that is located at row #3, column #3. From this tile, the user can move right, left, below or above by clicking on the small arrowheads (13). When the tile changes, the user can follow the location of each tile by following its row and column number in the window shown on top (14), e.g."50-4.5" which shows section #50, tile row#4, tile column#5. Each tile can be viewed in nonanotated (15) and opaquely annotated (16) forms. Clicking on "Opaque" button will load opaquely annotated tiles onto the applet.

From Wormtiler the user has the option to connect to Wormviewer by clicking on the button (17). This will take the user to slice number 50 in Wormviewer regardless of the TEM section number that was being viewed in the Tiler.
